What is Google Business Profile (Google My Business)?

Your free business listing on Google - controls what appears in Maps and local search.

Definition

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business, or GMB) is the free tool that controls how your business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. When someone searches for "dentist in Bandra" or "CA firm near me", the businesses shown in the map section at the top of results are those with active, well-managed Google Business Profiles. Your profile includes your business name, address, phone number, hours, photos, services, description, and - critically - customer reviews. It is separate from your website but closely linked. Google uses your Business Profile to determine whether you should appear in the local pack (the top 3 map results), and a complete, active profile combined with a good website significantly improves your ranking there. An incomplete or unclaimed profile - or worse, no profile at all - makes your business effectively invisible in the most visible section of local search results. Setting up and optimising a Google Business Profile typically takes 2–4 hours and is entirely free. For most Indian small businesses, this is the single highest-ROI activity they can do online - the time investment is minimal, but the return (appearing in front of thousands of monthly local searches) can be enormous. Despite this, a large proportion of Indian small businesses have either not claimed their listing or have left it incomplete.

Why it matters

Why Google Business Profile (Google My Business) matters for Indian businesses

The map pack gets significantly more clicks than organic results

For local service searches, the 3 businesses shown in the Google map pack attract approximately 44% of all clicks. The first organic (non-map) result gets around 28%. Businesses not in the map pack receive a fraction of the traffic. This means that for searches like "salon near me" or "dentist in Andheri", being in the top 3 map results is worth more than ranking first in the regular organic search listings. Without a Google Business Profile, you cannot appear in the map pack at all.

Reviews are the primary factor in customer trust and map pack ranking

Indian consumers are increasingly checking Google reviews before choosing any local business - from restaurants to clinics to CA firms. A profile with 4.5+ stars and 30+ reviews converts dramatically better than one with no reviews or a low rating. Reviews also directly influence your map pack ranking - Google rewards businesses with more, newer, and more detailed reviews. Building your review count to 25–50 genuine reviews within the first 6 months of setting up your profile is one of the most impactful things you can do for local visibility.

It's free - but most Indian businesses haven't touched it

The majority of small businesses in India have either never claimed their Google Business Profile (Google creates stub listings automatically from public data) or have a claimed profile that is months or years out of date - wrong hours, no photos, no description. This means that a business that spends 3–4 hours properly completing their profile can leapfrog competitors who have been in business for decades but never managed their online presence. The gap between a properly managed profile and an unmanaged one is enormous, and most Indian markets are full of this opportunity.

Real example from India

Google Business Profile (Google My Business) in practice

A gynaecologist's clinic in Nashik Road had been operating for 11 years, entirely on referrals and word-of-mouth. The clinic had no website and no Google Business Profile. A Google search for "gynaecologist Nashik Road" showed four competitors in the map pack; the clinic did not appear at all. After spending one afternoon setting up a fully completed Google Business Profile - with 15 photos of the clinic, full services list, accurate hours, and a compelling description - and then sending a WhatsApp message to the last 50 patients asking them to leave a review with a direct link, the clinic received 22 reviews with an average rating of 4.8 stars in the first 3 weeks. Within 4 weeks, it appeared in the top 3 map results for "gynaecologist Nashik" and "gynaecologist Nashik Road". The practice now receives 8–10 new patient enquiries per month from Google alone - with no advertising spend whatsoever.

How to improve

How to improve your google business profile (google my business)

1

Claim and verify your listing immediately

Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it exists as an unmanaged listing, claim it. If it does not exist, create it. Verification is usually done by postcard (takes 5–14 days) or phone/video call. Until verified, your listing has limited visibility. This is the non-negotiable first step - everything else builds on top of it.

2

Complete every single field in your profile

Business category (choose the most specific one available), description (use 750 characters, mention your services and location), services list (add every service you offer with descriptions), working hours (include holidays and special hours), phone number, website, and photos. Google rewards completeness with better visibility. An incomplete profile consistently ranks lower than a complete one for the same business.

3

Upload at least 15 high-quality photos

Photos are one of the most powerful trust signals on a Google Business Profile. Upload exterior shots (so customers can find you), interior shots (so they know what to expect), team photos, work samples, and product/service images. Profiles with 15+ photos receive significantly more calls and direction requests than profiles with 0–5 photos. Use natural lighting and a modern smartphone - professional photography is not required.

4

Build reviews systematically, not occasionally

Create a simple WhatsApp message template: "Thank you for visiting us! If you have a moment, your Google review would mean a lot - here's the direct link: [your review link]." Send this to every satisfied customer within 24–48 hours of their visit. Aim for 5 new reviews per month consistently. Google's algorithm rewards recency as well as volume - a business that gets 3 reviews per month will outrank one that got 50 reviews 3 years ago and none since.

5

Post an update at least twice a month

Google Business Profile posts are short updates - offers, announcements, new services, or events - that appear in your listing. Regular posting signals to Google that your business is active, which improves ranking. It also gives potential customers a reason to choose you over dormant competitors. Two posts per month takes about 20 minutes total and is one of the easiest ways to maintain local search visibility.
